Why this case study sits on our site

The 50% irrigation-savings figure for biochar on golf courses comes up regularly in conversation. We want to be clear: that figure belongs to Biochar Now, a US biochar producer based in Colorado. It is not a Possible Agriculture result, and we don’t claim it.

We include it here because:

  1. The mechanism is sound — biochar at meaningful inclusion rates in a sand-profile root zone does substantially increase water retention, and the magnitude is plausible in California’s irrigation context.
  2. The product profile is broadly similar to ours — high-temperature pyrolysis, activated, hardwood feedstock.
  3. Pretending the figure doesn’t exist would be silly; better to give it its proper attribution and let course superintendents draw their own conclusions about what’s transferable.
